can i switch to wireless internet just by getting a wireless router?
i currently have comcast triple play with high-speed internet, with a non-wireless router. if i buy a wireless router, will i be able to set up wireless internet without dealing with comcast? i already have a home desktop computer, and need to set up a laptop for telecommuting and wanted wireless for that.

- yes
- no, you still need comcast.
- Yes.
- call the company n ask them
- Yes.
- yes
- YEP!
- You have a misconception here. A wireless router only provides you with a wireless connection within 40 feet of your house at best. If you want wireless on the go, you need to find a wireless provider
- Yes. All you need to do is plug the cable into a wireless router. The router can be anything off the shelf (WRT54 is a popular one; check Amazon). It does not need to be a Comcast wireless router, despite what their salespeople may tell you.
- Do you have a wireless card in your laptop and desktop computer? If not, you will have to buy one of those as well.
- yes as long as you have the current routers login credentials for the ISP then you simply just replace the router with the wifi model
- yes, you just have to get the cable company to come out, make sure, if you have any laptops you want to put wireless on, you have to create a wirless connection on the computer by going into settings and all of that. the people will come out and explain that to you
- You will not need to deal with Comcast, but you need to make sure your Laptop has a Wireless card also. You can still connect the desktop via cable. So the answer is: As long as your Laptop has a wireless card, the only thing you need is a wireless router, and you will not have to call ComCast to get it setup.
- yes you will just have to configure your router to make sure it is open to hosting more than 1 computer at a time. and ill warn u the speed wont be as fast as your direct connoection through the wire. but yes this is possible without talking to comcast good luck
- I also have comcast and needed wireless for my laptop...it was easy, i bought the system at walmart for $40 or $50 and did it myself...very simple! Good luck!
- yeppers
- sure all u need is some wireless router than u need to connect wireless router to modem (that box u have from comcast) U don't need to deal with comcast, thats up to u what kind of network u prefer comcast is just your internet provider.... Just make sure your desktop has wireless network card, your laptop should have that card already, you can simply check in hardware manager what kind of network card u have....
- Not sure exactly what you are asking, but you can buy a wireless router, plug it in, and set it up in your home to be wireless within your home without dealing with Comcast to do that. You will still need to have Comcast to provide your Internet connection. Your desktop will need a wireless card, or some sort of wireless adapter (could be a USB device that looks like a USB drive.) The laptop will also need some sort of wireless adapter. If it is fairly new, it will probably already have it built in.
- Yes, it's pretty simple. It's hooked up the same way as the non wireless router. Just follow the instructions that come with the router to set it up (for, example the security features).
- You'd have to hook the wireless router up to the Comcast router, but you shouldn't need to work with Comcast to do so. Just plug it in like it's another computer and configure it however you need to.
- yes. hook it up in this order...outlet, coax cable, modem, other cord (ethernet, usb), router, a cable to hook up to the computer, or a wireless card for the computer, and whatever you're using to hook up wireless-ly be it usb card or wi-fi for your laptop. Go to the command prompt (cmd), and run, and ipconfig, and make sure you get a 192.168.x.x that way you know you're hooked up to the router. But if you're on the go, then you'd need to get something different that'll allow you to travel. IDK if Comcast provides that, but I know AT&T and Verizon and probably some other places do.
- Hi there In a word, "YES!" As long as your laptop has a wireless card, the wireless router will share your Comcast internet connection with all computers connected to it. The router install disk should do all the work for you. Connect Comcast modem to the router, then connect the router to your desktop computer. One thing I do recommend is setting up your new router with wireless WPA security. The default settings for most routers is wireless encryption (security) OFF. Follow the instructions that came with the router to set up WPA-PSK with a very long passphrase. Please use your desktop computer to set up wireless security as you cannot do this wirelessly from your laptop. Step one is to re-name your network. Routers usually have their name as the default, ie, Netgear, or Belkin, or Linksys. Change it to something different and unique. I named mine 'SPYGLASS' just so I'd recognize it in the list of available wireless networks in my neighborhood. Anything will do. I further recommend using a site like http://www.kurtm.net/wpa-pskgen/ My passphrase looks something like this d4\j;/.'"RmEOD}e&Vo?>un[]v\/e@Y?oBJL,4B'k3l@>n352ZC=-#`3KHiwXW1 which is impossible to crack. Once the router is set up (hardwired) with and new name and passphrase try to connect to it with your laptop wirelessly. Turn on your wireless card and scan for available networks. Whatever you named yours will be in the list. Click to join that network and you will be asked for the passphrase (sometimes called and encryption key). Enter the d4\j;/.'"RmEOD}e&Vo?>un[]v\/e@Y?oBJL,4B'k3l@>n352ZC=-#`3KHiwXW1 created by http://www.kurtm.net/wpa-pskgen/ and, if your desktop is on line, your laptop will be on the internet, too. Hope this helps. Gary
