How can I make my laptop have wireless internet?

I already have a laptop (Dell Inspiron 8600) I can only access internet if the internet cord is plugged directly into my computer How can I make my laptop wireless internet accessible? Do I need to buy an internet card? If so, how much do they cost? Is it a monthly charge?

1. Most laptops nowadays have wireless built in, but you need a wireless router. If you buy your own router there is no additional monthly charge.
