If my laptop has a wireless card do I still need a wireless router?

Currently I don't have a router, my laptop has a wireless card and works just fine. The apartment that I live in is switching services. The technical support person that told me about this said that they are installing dsl here tomorrow and that I might need to buy a wireless router. I wasn't sure if I need to or not?

  3. Wait and see if your wireless works after the change over,if not then you need a router.
  4. The wireless card picks up the signal while the router sends it out. You dont need to get a router, you could connect it wired. The dsl connects to the modem, and the modem can go to either your laptop(wired), or a router (wireless).
  5. yes unfortunatly, you do. the wireless card is picking up someone elses router and they can get into your computers at home with it. I would take this advice and get your own routerr, and put a passcode on it so no one else can get into your computer.
  6. The wireless card that is built into your laptop is like an antenna that receives a wireless signal. It can also send out a signal wirelessly that can be received by another antenna. If someone close by has a unsecured "hotspot" you can connect to their network and thereby connect to the internet. This is NOT advisable. You can get a wireless USB modem from an ISP (AT&T, Cricket, Sprint, etc.) and pay a monthly fee to connect to the internet. In this manner, you may connect your laptop to the internet no matter where you are. Home or away. A wireless router is a device that routes traffic within a home or business network. This is good if you have several devices you may want to connect such as extra computers or printers. Information can travel between the devices wirelessly. (This method can be the least expensive alternative depending on the INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER). If your not planning on having a small home network then I would forego the wireless router and go with a wireless USB modem for internet connectivity for your laptop. Cal
