Wireless network keeps disconnecting - technical solutions only please?

As title suggests. In a house with around 6 other wireless laptops connecting to the router which have no issues. The laptop has a wireless card which is enabled. Originally it got stuck on 'aquiring network address' with the XP networking wizard. The network authentication is OK. Therefore i assigned the laptop a static IP address and gave it the gateway to connect through. It now connects to the network OK. However no webpages are accessible while it is connected and im not sure why. Also, given a period of roughly a minute the network will disconnect and im back to square one. Ive tried the laptop in different locations close and far from the router. Solutions: The network type is 11g for the card but how can i find out what the router is set to? Also i can change the signal on the card i.e. 1 - 11 but how can i find out what the router is? The only solutions i can bring now is that i should replace the router? - im going to try a USB adapter later today. Reply to top Q - I have to use static. It will not give itself an IP with dynamic at all. I have NO idea what the router is, there is no make or even a model or serial on it. The broadband is SKY. Its an internal card. Yes, sorry i should have been more specific. I assigned the gateway of the router to the laptop. I think i tried to assign a DNS server but at this point i started going out of my depth but i can see i need it now. Any idea on an address i could use? or how to find it i don't think its under IP config on the other laptops from memory.

1. Get ris of the static address. USe dynamic. Next, make sure all cmoputer's share the same Group or Domain name (i.e., Smiths or last name). Restart all the PC's. On each PC, right click on the folders that you want the other PC's to see by allowing "sharing". Be sure to allow users to edit or change. This is an option you will see under security of each folder (right click on the folder for this option). If you wish, use the already in place "Sharing folders". Once you do this, try to connect to the wireless connection. If you still encounter a problem, be sure that you have "refreshed or repaired" the wireless connection to obtain a new IP address.
2. If there are 6 other laptops in the house that use the router it's probably not the router. Does the problem exist if you try using wireless some where else? It's likely the card itself.
3. What make is the router and what make is the wireless card, also is the wireless card internal or is it a add on card, i need this info to help you.
4. Hard to diagnose from the distance. But I see that you have a problem with the DHCP subscription. It didn't work at first and then, with th IP address fixed, it did. Did you assign gateway and DNS servers too? If not, that's part of the problem. With the IP address you can access the local network but you have no route to go out (Internet) or locate resources (DNS, name resolution). I don't think the protocol is the issue. If your router doesn't work with 11g you wouldn't have been able to connect at all and you said that at some point you did (at least to the local network). But to be sure, check the manual. Sounds obvious but it's a common mistake not to read it.
5. IF you put in the proper DNS servers the static IP should be ok, chek the DNS settings on the router to get the proper settings. Did you check for updated drivers/firmware for your wireless NIC . I have seen these updates work wonders for wireless NIC's having trouble getting addresses from a DHCP server over a wireless network. Just for Giggles, try disabling then enabling the wireless network connection and see if it pulls an address from the DHCP server. Good Luck
